Yasuke is inspired by the true story of an African mercenary that became a samurai under one of Japan’s most revered Shoguns.
Wharton-Rigby's script will tell the story of an African warrior/mercenary who traveled to Japan with Jesuit priests. While in Japan, Yasuke, as he called by the Japanese, is initially a curiosity, becomes a trusted member of one of Japan’s most respected Shogun’s, Oda Nobunaga, court. Because of his strength, loyalty, and fighting skills, under Nobunaga’s reign, Yasuke was given the title of samurai. Yasuke stayed a samurai until Nobunaga’s death after the betrayal from one of his most trusted allies.
